CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The 7th National Elder Abuse Conference (NEAC) is the only annual conference specifically addressing elder abuse in Australia. Walk the Talk: Stepping Up Together will build on the success of the past six conferences and is uniquely placed to examine the confluence of factors that allow us to:

  • hear about programs such as those funded under the National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians [Elder Abuse] 2019-2023;
  • examine the impact of COVID-19 on older people;
  • consider the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety;
  • challenge our preconceptions with the release of the Prevalence Study;
  • consider how we can address ageism; and
  • comprehend the impact outlined in the Economic Cost of Elder Abuse report.

Older people experience distinct human rights violations and have distinct human rights needs that are not addressed sufficiently by existing mechanisms. Human rights principles must guide aged care reforms.

We know elder abuse takes many forms and is more likely to be perpetrated by someone the older person knows.

We expect many presentations at the conference will be inflected by insights and lessons from the experiences of older people during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also expect its formal and informal conversations about elder abuse to continue those started in our related Walk the Talk Forum Series 2021

Event Overview

The two-day hybrid conference will intersperse plenaries featuring eminent national and international experts with concurrent presentations by delegates. We value peer-to-peer learning experiences and put a premium on diversity. Social activities will provide many opportunities for networking, while a post-conference workshop on 16 February will invite delegates to share and consolidate their responses to elder abuse, rights and ageism issues raised during the conference.

Our ambition for NEAC 2022 is that you will leave the conference re-energised to continue advocating for older Australians and driving long-term change.

We hope COVID-19 restrictions on travel will be minimal by February 2022 and urge you to make your submission in the expectation that you will present in person. If online presentation is your only option, please indicate this in your abstract submission.

Presentation formats

To ensure the conference is as motivating as possible, we are accepting proposals in a wide range of formats. These include but are not restricted to:

  • spoken presentations of scholarly papers, practice reviews, policy initiatives, lived experience, creative writing or written journalism with or without PowerPoint or other visual aids;
  • moderated panels of up to four presenters speaking to a single broad topic;
  • printed or online posters summarising new research or innovative practice in words and images;
  • debates on topical issues or differing approaches to service provision;
  • stories of lived experience;
  • demonstrations and analyses of primary prevention approaches and resources;
  • visual art;
  • performance; and
  • videos and podcasts (creative, campaigning or journalistic).

Themes:

Your submission should broadly align with one of the following five topics.
