Conference Objectives

The 7th National Elder Abuse Conference brings together individuals and organisations across sectors that connect with older people to discuss, debate and learn about

Background

The National Elder Abuse Conference is the only annual conference specifically addressing elder abuse in Australia. In 2022, for the first time, the conference will be held in Tasmania. It will build on the successes of past conferences to share the stories and experiences of older people, exchange the latest national and international research and evidence, highlight programs and responses being delivered in Australia and engage a diverse audience to participate in eradicating elder abuse.

As many as 10 per cent of older Australians experience abuse, whether it be financial, legal, emotional, physical or neglect, with much of the abuse hidden in families where victims do not know how to seek help. Elder abuse is more likely to be perpetrated by a person the older person knows.

The release of the report from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety has illuminated a national conversation on elder abuse and amplifies our shared expectation that it must lead to positive change.

The 7th Annual National Elder Abuse Conference will harness this momentum, energy and commitment to make change happen faster. At Walk The Talk, we will actively:

  • Consider the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety
  • Challenge our preconceptions with the release of the National Prevalence Study
  • Examine the impact of COVID-19 on older people.

Sustainability

The conference is working towards having a limited impact on the environment through careful consumption of energy and resources. This includes the limiting of printed material by providing a digitally published conference program via the conference app, and electronic only communications to conference delegates. Additionally, the conference will not produce non-essential conference materials and products such as delegate satchels and general branded merchandise items, and asks all conference sponsors and exhibitors to produce only essential conference materials and products using environmentally and socially friendly resources.
