Things you really need to know to optimize GNSS in the fieldsp

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Abstract document

Many people will be making simple mistakes that have (ultimately) significant consequences without being aware because they are simply unconsciously unaware. They do not know that they do not know.

Purpose of this presentation is to educate users on some fundamental concepts of space-based position for better field practices to increase performance and accuracy, particularly in challenging/remote environments.

GNSS – What does it mean, but more importantly, what does it mean for you? Key words – GPS, GNSS, Global Constellations, Regional Constellation
What is SouthPAN and why it matters so much to ESA? Key phrase – Australian New Zealand’s regional SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System)
NPI policy, how it may save you literally thousands of dollars! Key Words – NTRIP, CORSNet, Base Station, mountpoint
How to turn your Smartphone or iOS/Android Tablet into a powerful high accuracy mapping and data collector device. Key phrase – Replace Internal Location Based Services with external High accuracy GNSS.
Horizontal Datums – lets unravel this simplistically so you do not make a major simple mistake. Key words – GDA94, GDA 2020, WGS 084, ITRF current epoch.
Vertical Datums – why are my heights so different to Australian Height Datum? Key Words – Geoid Model, Ellipsoid Heights, Gravity, Mean Sea Level, Australian Height Datum

Biography

Peter first used GPS in early 1986 when working as a Geodetic and Topographic surveyor for the Division of Survey and Mapping (Victoria). With a wealth of hands on experience, he went into business in 1991 to sell, support, train, and consult on GPS, now GNSS. Peter works mainly with subject matter experts in a variety of field that are not surveying. The users domain knowledge may be environmental, ecology, arboriculture, forestry, cultural heritage, utilities, pipelines etc. Accurate location allows these users to comply with legislation, provide extra value to clients through visualization of data, measurement of small changes over time and work with other related data sets in a GIS. New technologies lower cost and provide amazing advancements but also bring the requirement for new knowledge. As an example, SouthPAN provides sub metre accuracy anywhere in Australia for free without the need for an internet connection or local base station. However, being space based corrections, the datum is not GDA2020, the current survey and mapping datum for Australia. Peter will provide many insights to ensure the values you have, represent the real world location. Peter will be there to provide additional insights and answer your need to know question.
